Shochat, Israel

(1886-1961)
   Founder of Hashomer. Born in Belorussia, he went to Palestine in 1904. He created a group of Jewish guards who to protect the yishuv. In 1907 he was a founder of Bar-Giora which was superseded by Hashomer chaired by Shochat. During World War I he was exiled by Ottoman authorities. In 1920 Hashomer was replaced by the Haganah.
